Altered Modalities

Modern Contemporary

Who we are:

We debuted our first full length concert in October 2002 and since then have been asked to perform as guest artists in numerous concerts, benefits, and showcases throughout the country. We recently performed in the annual festival for Dancers Responding to AIDS in New York City and showcased in the L.A. Dance Invitational, a benefit for the Gay and Lesbian Center in Los Angeles.

In 2000, Martha Kelly-Fierro was awarded the Gold Leo award at the Jazz Dance World Congress for her choreography set on her company. Altered Modalities has performed at the University of Arizona, Fullerton College, California Polytechnic University SLO, Fresno City College, and College of the Sequoias. Altered Modalities also offers workshops to their community and works with students who would otherwise not be able to experience dance.

“Contemporary”, “alternative”, and “modern” are all characteristic of the company. However, labeling the dancers and the choreography any one style does not do any justice, since both are quite versatile. The differences in strengths, bodies, and ages make the group interesting to watch, as well as, challenging and rewarding to choreograph on.

The Director:

Martha Kelley-Fierro’s eclectic choreography stems from her background of well-versed dance training, including jazz, tap, ballet, and modern. Early in her career, she assisted New York and Los Angeles based choreographers, such as Keith Clifton and Jeff Amsden. She also has studied extensively with Mia Michaels, Artistic Director of  R.A.W. and choreographer for Cirque de Soleil, and Jenn Ballard, Artistic Director for Cedar Lake Dance Ensemble.

Martha’s choreography has received much recognition nationwide such as The Houston Metropolitan Dance Company. Most recently, her company was asked to perform in New York City for a Dancers Responding to AIDS (DRA) annual festival. Her choreography has also been presented and awarded numerous awards at nearly every convention circuit throughout the United States.

For nearly ten years, Martha was a featured dancer, dance captain, and eventually the choreographer for the official “pageant dancers” in The Miss California Pageant.  Traveling to Guatemala for several years, Martha has had the opportunity to share her knowledge of movement and technical style with dancers who are hungry for more information and artistry.
